Wonka’s chocolate river and wet feet

After arriving in Montezuma, on our first full day we decided on a walk to the local waterfalls. It was only meant to be about 10 mins out of town to the trailhead and then about 20 mins to the lower falls.

Now, I’m not sure what it says about our fitness or aclimitisation, but I’m pretty sure it took well over an hour for us to get there! The walk up the riverbed was, however, beautiful and fun so definitely worth it.

I’d heard you could enjoy a swim in the pool at the base of the waterfall and I was very much looking forward to cooling off. However, no-one mentioned I’d be swimming in Willy Wonka’s chocolate river! But there were a few others in there, including a local, so in I went and surprisingly refreshing it was too (and so far I’m still alive so couldn’t have been too awful in there!!)

After this we decided to walk up the hill to the upper two sets of waterfalls. That turned out to be easier said than done in the ridiculous humidity, not to mention taking our lives (or at least our dry feet) into our hands to cross the river to the steps up in the first place!

By the time we made it back to our AirBnB I think Richard was on the verge of heat stroke and I was incredibly thankful for the aircon we had in our apartment!

Today we decided on a more chilled day with a walk along the coast, via the beach and jungle paths. On the way back, the tide was heading in and the beaches getting narrower and narrower. At one point we thought it a laugh to play a game of how close to the incoming tide did we dare stand. Turns out we’re less clever than the sea and within a few mins got swamped by an incoming wave!  Oops! A very squelchy walk back ensued, with us ruing our impulsive game and hoping our boots don’t take too many days to dry out!!

After a slightly crazy suggestion by me in the pub just after we bought our first house about 5 years ago that we should ‘just quit everything and go travelling for a year’ we got a bit more realistic (not least because of COVID) and eventually landed on 4 1/2 months in Central and South America. This website is the outcome of those musings down the pub and hopefully our ensuing adventures!
