Welcome to the Streets of San Francisco

The photograph doesn’t do justice to the steepness of some streets here, many are lung busting, wheeze inducingly steep – Quito is officially called San Francisco de Quito.

We’ve spent a few days here ‘slothing’ round the city before we disembark to the Galapagos.

The best thing we’ve done is take a free tour of the city to learn more about the history and culture. Our guide (Andrea) is local, has lived here for many years and was great; ‘payment’ is by way of a small tip at the end, which is how she earns her living.

One of the great places she took us to was the main market, simply called Mercado Central, where many of the locals eat; we’ve spent the last two days having lunch there, trying various local dishes.

Corvina mixta con papas y arroz – Fried sea bass with potatoes, rice and a prawn broth. Oh, and popcorn!?
Menudo con morcilla – Pork giblet broth with blood sausage…mmmmmmmm!

Our major outing here was the cable car (TeleferiQo) up the Pichincha Volcano. The city altitude is around 2,840m, the cable car takes you to 4,000m – more lung busting!

Neither of us have been particularly enamoured with Quito, for various reasons…. so onwards and, err, downwards!!

Rebecca & Richard here

After a slightly crazy suggestion by me in the pub just after we bought our first house about 5 years ago that we should ‘just quit everything and go travelling for a year’ we got a bit more realistic (not least because of COVID) and eventually landed on 4 1/2 months in Central and South America. This website is the outcome of those musings down the pub and hopefully our ensuing adventures!
